Why I Use It

I have tried a number of note-taking apps over the years — OneNote being the most notable — but none of them quite fit the way I wanted to work. Trilium feels similar in spirit to Obsidian with its hierarchical structure and note linking, but the key difference is that it runs as a web application. That means my notes live on my server and are accessible from any device through a browser without needing to sync files, manage vaults, or maintain multiple copies across machines. There is one source of truth and it is always current. Trilium also solved a frustrating problem I ran into with my cybersecurity notes: Microsoft Defender kept flagging and deleting files that contained anything resembling offensive security content, even when those notes were purely for learning purposes. Since Trilium stores everything server-side and I access it through a browser, Defender never touches the content. My notes stay intact no matter what I am documenting.
