Why I Use It

Before Snipe-IT I went through a few attempts at inventory management — starting with a spreadsheet, then Netbox, which was powerful but overkill for a home lab. When I found Snipe-IT the name made me think it was a help desk tool, but once I started using it I realized it was almost exactly what I needed. I use it to track all of my hardware assets with custom fields for specs like RAM and CPU, store product keys and software licenses in one centralized place, and keep an inventory of accessories and components including purchase prices, order numbers, and dates. Seeing the totals in the reports section was a bit of a wake-up call for how much I had been spending on equipment. One of my favorite features is the QR code asset tags — I can print a label, stick it on a device, and instantly scan it to pull up every detail about that item. It also supports LDAP and SAML federation, which makes it suitable well beyond just a home lab setting.
